GitHub Repo MCP server
by Ryan0204
Lets your AI open any public GitHub repository, list its folders, and read its files for you.

This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to GitHub, the place where code projects live. Once it is set up, you can point your AI at a public project and ask it to show you what is inside. It is handy for anyone who wants to peek at a code project without downloading anything.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat with you using what it already knows. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an app or service. This one connects your AI to GitHub, so it can look inside public repositories for you. You just ask in normal words, and the helper fetches the answer.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI something like show me the files in this GitHub project. Your AI passes that request to this helper program running quietly in the background. The helper talks to GitHub's public service and asks for the list of folders or the file you wanted. GitHub sends the information back, and the helper hands it to your AI. Your AI then shows it to you right in the chat as a tidy list or the file's text.
Click to zoomWhat you can do with it
- List all files and folders at the top level of a public GitHub repository
- Open a specific folder inside a repository and see what is in it
- Read the contents of a code or text file from a repository
- Check a project's README to see what it is about
- Explore a project's structure without downloading anything
Try asking your AI
- “Show me the contents of the repository at https://github.com/Ryan0204/github-repo-mcp”
- “What files are in the src folder of https://github.com/Ryan0204/github-repo-mcp?”
- “Show me the README.md file from https://github.com/Ryan0204/github-repo-mcp”
- “List the top-level folders of https://github.com/facebook/react”
What it gives back to you
You get back plain text in your chat. For a folder, it is a list of file and folder names. For a file, it is the actual text inside that file. If something goes wrong, like hitting a limit, you get a short error message instead.
Before you start
What you need
- Node.js 18 or newer installed on your computer
- An MCP client that supports stdio, like Cursor, Windsurf, or Claude Desktop
- Optional: a GitHub personal access token for higher request limits (the site gives you one for free)
Good to know
Without a GitHub token you are limited to 60 requests per hour, and this helper can only read public repositories, not private ones.
Install it with your AI
Add GitHub Repo MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed
You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
Sign in to get the install prompt
Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check GitHub Repo MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
Who it's for
Anyone curious about code projects, plus developers, students, and writers who want to look inside public GitHub repositories without cloning them.
