The Tab MCP server

by seancrecord

Your AI keeps a local ledger of every tool you pay for and warns you before a trial converts.

Flow diagram: you ask your AI “I just started a free trial of Notion, it converts in 14 days, log it”, on your own computer The Tab MCP server works with the Tab, and you get back what is due and trial warnings.

The Tab is a small helper that lets your AI keep track of the software subscriptions and trials you sign up for. It writes everything to one plain file on your own computer, so nothing is sent anywhere unless you say so. It is handy if you keep forgetting which free trial turns into a paid plan next week.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to something, and here it connects your AI to a local spending ledger called The Tab. Once it is set up, your AI can write down a new trial, look up what is due, and warn you before a charge happens. The helper runs on your machine and keeps its notes in a single file you can open and read yourself.

What this MCP server does

You tell your AI about a tool you signed up for, for example a free trial that ends in two weeks. Your AI passes that to The Tab, which writes it into a local file on your computer. Later, when you ask what is due, your AI reads that file and tells you the most expensive or most urgent item first. If a trial is about to convert, The Tab can flag it so your AI mentions it the next time you talk. You can also hand it your card statement as a CSV and it will compare the two, asking questions rather than changing anything.

What you can do with it

  • Log a new trial, a paid plan, a cancellation, or a price change
  • Ask what is due right now, with the most expensive item first
  • See which trials convert inside the next few weeks
  • Get a monthly burn report with category subtotals and idle tools
  • Check your own history before signing up for something new
  • Compare your card statement against the ledger, both directions
  • Export everything to a file any time, at no charge

Try asking your AI

  • “I just started a free trial of Notion, it converts in 14 days, log it”
  • “What is due right now?”
  • “Which of my trials convert in the next 30 days?”
  • “Give me my monthly burn rollup and tell me what it cannot see”

What it gives back to you

You get back short answers in the chat: a list of what is due, a monthly total with subtotals, or a warning about a trial that is about to charge. Reports also say what they could not see, like usage-based bills that are marked as estimates. When you export, you get the whole file back as JSONL or CSV. The Tab never tells you to cancel anything, it just gives you the facts and counts.

Before you start

What you need

  • Node.js 18 or newer on your computer
  • An MCP client that can run local servers, such as the Claude desktop app
  • Nothing else, no account and no password

Good to know

It keeps a private spending ledger on your computer, and if you turn on contribution it can send one anonymized delta to a shared pool, so check that setting if you care about privacy.

Install it with your AI

Add The Tab MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.

Sign in to get the install prompt

Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check The Tab MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
