Text Editor MCP server
by tumf
Let your AI open parts of text files, make precise line edits, and save the changes.

This is a small helper program that lets your AI assistant work directly with text files sitting on your computer. You tell it something like "read lines 40 to 55" or "replace those three lines," and it goes ahead and does just that part. It is handy if you keep notes, logs, scripts, or documentation as simple text files and want help tidying them up without copying everything into the chat window yourself.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only talk: whatever knowledge lives inside the conversation stays there. An MCP server is a little companion program that runs alongside your AI and hands it extra skills. This particular one connects your AI to text files stored locally, so instead of pasting whole documents into the chat box, your AI opens just the piece it needs and writes changes straight back. Think of it as giving your assistant permission to reach into a drawer of papers rather than asking you to photocopy everything first.
What this MCP server does
When you ask your AI to peek at or fix some text, your AI sends the request to this helper behind the scenes. The helper finds the right file, counts down to the exact lines involved, grabs only those, and shows them to your AI. When your AI wants to change wording, insert a paragraph, append a note, or remove old rows, the helper carries that out carefully and confirms whether it worked. Because only the relevant slice travels between the two programs, long files don't blow up your chat size or cost.
Click to zoomWhat you can do with it
- Read chosen stretches of a big log or document without pulling in the entire thing
- Replace certain numbered lines while leaving the rest untouched
- Append new paragraphs or entries onto the end of a growing journal-style file
- Insert additional instructions mid-script after a given row
- Delete outdated blocks cleanly across many spots in one shot
- Handle files saved in different alphabets' encodings, including Japanese Shift-JIS and Latin accents
Try asking your AI
- “Open /home/alex/logs/build.log around lines 120 to 145 and summarise what went wrong.”
- “In /projects/report.md swap lines 30 through 33 for our updated summary I'll give below.”
- “Add today's progress entry to the very end of /work/journal.txt saying we finished module four testing.”
- “Take away lines 88 to 92 from /config/settings.conf because they duplicate earlier defaults.”
What it gives back to you
Your AI gets back either snippets of the actual text plus details like how many total lines exist and fingerprints used later for safety, or simply okay-or-not results after writing. In practice you see normal conversational replies built from those pieces: quoted passages, rewritten sections shown next to originals, confirmations stating 'done,' or warnings telling you someone else touched the file since last check.
