Kilo-Kit is a helper that sits between you and your AI coding assistant. It makes the AI slow down, think through a plan, and get your approval before it changes any files. It is handy if you use an AI to write or fix code and you want fewer surprises.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to something else. This one connects your AI to a set of thinking tools and a library of coding skills, so it can plan, check its own work, and run commands more carefully. You install it once, and then your AI can use it whenever you ask.

What this MCP server does

When you give your AI a coding task, the AI first asks Kilo-Kit to look at your project and remember what it already knows. Kilo-Kit then walks the AI through a short planning routine, like weighing three options and poking holes in the plan. Once you approve the plan, the AI can read, edit, and run commands, but Kilo-Kit watches every step and blocks anything risky. At the end, it checks the work and saves a note about what happened so the AI can learn for next time.

What you can do with it

  • Plan a coding task before touching any files
  • Search a library of 180 ready-made coding skills
  • Run a five-whys check to find the real cause of a bug
  • Stress-test a plan by arguing against it
  • Read, edit, and write files with safety checks
  • Run terminal commands with guardrails
  • Save lessons learned so the AI remembers next session

Try asking your AI

  • “Plan how to add a login page to my project, and show me the plan before changing anything”
  • “Find the root cause of this bug using the five-whys method”
  • “Load the brainstorming skill and help me think through this feature”
  • “Review my last change and tell me if it is safe to commit”

What it gives back to you

You get back a short plan, a list of options with trade-offs, or a summary of what the AI found. When the AI edits files or runs commands, you see what it did and whether Kilo-Kit allowed it. At the end, you get a short report of the work and any lessons saved for later.

Before you start

What you need

  • Node.js 18 or newer installed on your computer
  • An AI coding client that supports MCP, like Cursor, Claude Desktop, Windsurf, or Gemini CLI

Good to know

It can read, change, and run things in your project, so only use it on code you are comfortable letting an AI touch, and review what it does.

Install it with your AI

Add Kilo-Kit MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.

Sign in to get the install prompt

Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check Kilo-Kit MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
