Copilot CLI MCP server
by x51xxx
Ask GitHub Copilot CLI to read, review and bulk-process your code straight from your AI chat window.

This is a small connector that lets your AI assistant talk to GitHub Copilot CLI for you. Instead of switching windows and typing into the command line yourself, you just describe what you want in plain words. It is handiest for developers and anyone who reviews or cleans up code regularly.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat based on what it already knows. An MCP server is a little helper program running behind the scenes that gives your AI a new ability. Here, that helper links your AI to GitHub Copilot CLI sitting on your computer. So when you say "check my main file", your AI passes the job along and brings the answer back to the same chat.
What this MCP server does
When you ask something, your AI sends the request to this helper instead of answering alone. The helper runs GitHub Copilot CLI quietly underneath and waits for the result. You can point at real files using the @ sign, such as @src/, so Copilot actually opens those files rather than guessing. Then whatever comes out lands right in your conversation as readable text. Nothing extra happens until you send a request.
Click to zoomWhat you can do with it
- Explain any file or folder in your project
- Review code for bugs, weak spots and style problems
- Refactor many files in one go with a single instruction
- Brainstorm feature ideas using guided methods like SCAMPER
- Check whether the setup works with a quick ping
Try asking your AI
- “Analyze src/main.ts and tell me what it does”
- “Run a security review on api/ and show me how to fix each problem”
- “Batch-refactor all JavaScript files in src/ to modern syntax”
- “Summarize everything in package.json and list the dependencies”
What it gives back to you
Most replies come back as written explanations or lists pasted into your chat. Reviews arrive grouped by topic, sometimes ranked worst-first, often with suggested fixes attached. When several files were processed together, you also see a short summary saying which ones worked and which failed. Anything that changed stays where it belongs, since the actual edits happen wherever Copilot writes them.
Before you start
What you need
- Node.js version 18 or newer
- GitHub Copilot CLI installed and signed in
- Your usual AI coding app, such as Claude Code or Claude Desktop
Good to know
Because permission checks are relaxed by default, Copilot may freely read folders and possibly make changes, so keep backups of anything precious and glance over results before trusting them.
