OpenDAL MCP server
by Xuanwo
Let your AI list and read files from cloud storage like S3, Azure Blob, or Google Cloud.

This is a small helper that lets your AI look inside cloud storage services. It works with many kinds of storage, including Amazon S3, Azure Blob Storage, and Google Cloud Storage. It is handy if your files live in the cloud and you want your AI to read them for you.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an app or service. This one connects your AI to Apache OpenDAL, a tool that talks to many storage services at once. So once it is set up, your AI can look things up in your storage and bring answers back to you.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI something about your files, like what is in a folder or what a file says. Your AI passes that request to this helper. The helper talks to your storage service, such as S3 or Azure Blob, using the settings you gave it. It gets the list or the file contents back and hands them to your AI. Your AI then shows you the answer right in the chat.
Click to zoomWhat you can do with it
- List files and folders in your cloud storage
- Read the contents of a file
- Check what is inside a folder before you open it
- Read text files and detect when a file is not text
- Look at files across different storage services with the same setup
Try asking your AI
- “List everything in mys3://mybucket/reports”
- “Read the file mys3://mybucket/notes/todo.txt and summarize it”
- “What files are in my Azure Blob folder this week”
- “Show me the contents of the config file in my Google Cloud bucket”
What it gives back to you
You get answers in plain chat. For a list, your AI shows the file and folder names it found. For a read, it shows the file contents or a summary of them. If a file is not text, it tells you that instead of showing garbled characters.
Before you start
What you need
- Python and the uv tool installed on your computer
- The Claude desktop app (or another app that supports MCP servers)
- Access details for your storage service, like a bucket name and keys
Good to know
This helper can read your cloud storage files, so only connect storage you are comfortable letting your AI see.
