Box MCP server
by hmk
Lets your AI search and read files stored in your Box account.

This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to Box, the online place where many companies keep their files. Once it is set up, you can ask your AI to find a document in Box or read one for you, without opening Box yourself. It is handy for anyone whose team stores contracts, reports, or notes in Box.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat with you using what it already knows. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an app. This one connects your AI to Box, so it can look things up and read files there for you. You just ask in normal words, and the helper does the talking to Box behind the scenes.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI something like find the latest invoice in Box. Your AI passes that request to this helper program. The helper signs in to your Box account and searches your files. When it finds something, it can read the file and hand the text back to your AI. Your AI then tells you what it found, right in the chat.
Click to zoomWhat you can do with it
- Search your Box files by name or keyword
- Read the text inside a PDF stored in Box
- Read the text inside a Word document stored in Box
- Find a specific document and summarise it for you
- Answer questions using the contents of a Box file
- List files that match what you are looking for
Try asking your AI
- “Search my Box for the contract with Acme from last year”
- “Read the quarterly report PDF in Box and give me the main numbers”
- “Find the meeting notes from March in Box and summarise them”
- “Is there a Word document in Box about the new pricing plan?”
What it gives back to you
You get answers in plain chat text. If you asked for a search, your AI shows you the matching files it found. If you asked it to read a document, it gives you a summary or the details you asked about. It does not change or move anything in Box, it only looks and reads.
Before you start
What you need
- A Box account (a free developer account works for testing)
- A Box developer token, or a JWT setup for longer use
- The Claude desktop app or another AI app that supports MCP servers
- Node.js installed on your computer
Good to know
It can read the contents of your Box files, so only connect it to an account you are comfortable letting your AI look inside.
