ChangeThisFile MCP server

by aadilr

Turn files from one format into another, right from your AI chat.

Flow diagram: you ask your AI “Turn this PDF into a Word file”, the ChangeThisFile MCP server works in steps: you share a file, then it converts the file, then you get a download link, and you get back your converted file.

This is a helper that lets your AI change a file from one format to another, like turning a Word document into a PDF or a video into an MP3. It also translates documents, pulls tables out of PDFs and images, and shrinks files to a size you pick. It is handy if you deal with files all day and don't want to open five different apps to change them.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an app or service. This one connects your AI to ChangeThisFile, a file conversion service, so when you ask for a format change, your AI can actually do it instead of just telling you how. You stay in the chat, and the helper does the file work behind the scenes.

What this MCP server does

You tell your AI something like "turn this PDF into a Word file" and give it a link or the file itself. Your AI passes that request to this helper, which sends it to ChangeThisFile. ChangeThisFile does the conversion on its servers and hands back a download link. Your AI shows you that link in the chat, and you click it to get your new file. The link works for one hour, so grab the file while it is fresh.

What you can do with it

  • Convert a file from one format to another, like DOCX to PDF or MP4 to MP3
  • List every format a given file type can be turned into
  • Translate a document while keeping its layout
  • Pull tables out of a PDF or a picture into Excel
  • Compress a PDF, image, or video down to an exact maximum size
  • Ask in plain words, like "make this smaller" or "turn this into a spreadsheet"
  • Check on a job you started earlier and get its download link

Try asking your AI

  • “Turn this PDF into a Word document and give me the download link”
  • “What formats can I convert a DOCX file into?”
  • “Extract the tables from this PDF into Excel”
  • “Compress this video so it is under 10 MB”

What it gives back to you

You get answers in the chat, usually a download link you can click, plus a short note about what was done. For translation and table extraction, you first get a free preview and a link to pay for the full result. For compression, you get a smaller file back. For listing formats, you get a plain list of options.

Before you start

What you need

  • An MCP client that can connect to this server, like Claude Desktop or Claude Code
  • A link to a file that is publicly reachable, or the file itself if it is under about 5 MB
  • Optionally, a free ChangeThisFile key from their dashboard for more conversions per month

Good to know

Your files are uploaded to ChangeThisFile's servers to be processed, so avoid sending anything private or sensitive, and remember the download link expires after one hour.
