CodeGraph Brain MCP server

by zaebee

Your AI can answer "what breaks if I change this" by looking at a real map of your code, not guessing.

Flow diagram: you ask your AI “What breaks if I rename create_user?”, on your own computer the CodeGraph Brain MCP server works with your project folder, and you get back list of affected code.

This connects your AI assistant to a map of your Python or TypeScript code base called a code graph. Once it is set up, you can ask questions like what calls a certain function or whether changing something might break other parts of the project. It is mainly useful for developers who want straight answers about how pieces of code connect.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only talk based on whatever text ends up in front of it. An MCP server is a little helper program running next to your AI that gives it extra abilities. This particular helper builds a picture of your code where every function and method gets a proper name and lines show what calls what. When you ask a question about connections in your code, your AI goes through this helper instead of skimming random files. Everything happens on your computer; your code does not leave your machine.

What this MCP server does

First the helper scans your project folder and turns each file into entries plus links showing calls and imports between them. Those links live in a small database saved on your disk. Then, whenever you ask your AI something such as what depends on a given piece of code, the AI passes the request to this helper. The helper walks along those stored links several steps deep and brings back the matching chains together with file locations. Nothing invented appears in the result; places it truly cannot match stay clearly labelled as unknown.

What you can do with it

  • Find out everything that calls a specific function, going many levels upward
  • Trace all the things some chosen function itself leads down to
  • Get candidates for a half remembered name across modules and folders
  • Check whether authorization checks actually sit behind entry handlers
  • Measure tightness between components and spot oversized central units

Try asking your AI

  • “What breaks if we rename my_project.services.UserService.create_user”
  • “Show me the deepest call paths leading away from payments.process_refund”
  • “Which endpoints handle orders without ever reaching our permission check layer”
  • “Give me overview stats for the biggest top level groups inside this repository”
