by zlinzzzz

Lets your AI look up stock prices, company financials and China economic data for you.

finData is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to financial data services. Once it is set up, you can just ask your AI for stock prices, company reports or economic numbers, and it fetches them for you. It is handy for anyone who works with finance but does not want to click through data websites all day.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you using what it already knows. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an outside service. This one connects your AI to financial data providers like Tushare, so it can look up real market and company numbers. When you ask a question, your AI passes the request to this helper, and the helper brings back the data.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI something like the daily price of a stock or a company's income statement. Your AI sends that request to the finData helper. The helper talks to a financial data provider, such as Tushare, using the access token you set up. The provider sends back the numbers, and the helper hands them to your AI. Your AI then shows you the result in the chat, usually as a table or a short summary.

What you can do with it

  • Look up daily stock market prices
  • Get basic information about a stock or listed company
  • Pull income statements, balance sheets and cash flow statements
  • Check China's GDP, CPI, PPI and PMI numbers
  • See the Loan Prime Rate (LPR) and Shibor data
  • Check money supply and social financing figures

Try asking your AI

  • “What was the daily closing price of stock 000001.SZ last week?”
  • “Show me the income statement for 600519.SH for 2023.”
  • “What is China's latest CPI and PPI?”
  • “Give me the basic company info for stock 000001.SZ.”

What it gives back to you

You get back the actual data you asked for, shown as a table or a short list in the chat. For example, daily prices come back as dates and numbers, and financial statements come back as line items with values. Your AI may also summarise the numbers in a sentence or two if you ask. Nothing is changed on your side, it is just reading data.

Before you start

What you need

  • Python 3.11 or newer
  • The uv tool installed on your computer
  • A Tushare account and API token (Tushare gives you a token when you sign up)
  • An MCP client such as Claude Desktop or another app that supports MCP

Good to know

It only reads data, so it will not change or delete anything, but you need a valid data provider token and some providers may charge for heavy use.

Install it with your AI

Add finData MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
