Airbnb Adds Hotels to Its Platform, Expands Customer Support AI Globally
Airbnb is officially launching hotel listings on its platform, moving beyond its original model of connecting travelers with private property owners. The company is starting with boutique hotels in 20 cities including New York, Paris, London, Madrid, Rome, and Singapore.
The shift addresses a business problem: short-term rental restrictions in major cities like New York and Singapore have blocked Airbnb from operating in some of the world's most valuable travel markets. Hotels offer a workaround to those regulations.
Users searching for one- or two-night stays will see hotel recommendations automatically. A new filter lets them view only hotels if preferred. Airbnb promises a price match guarantee, refunding the difference in app credits if a guest finds the same listing cheaper elsewhere.
Expanding Beyond Accommodation
Hotels are one piece of a larger strategy. Airbnb has added grocery delivery, airport pickups, luggage storage at over 15,000 locations, and is launching car rentals this summer. The company also expanded its experiences section to include visits with local guides at 3,000 landmarks and more than 2,500 food experiences.
This mirrors a broader shift across travel tech. Uber, traditionally a ride-hailing company, has moved into hotel and trip booking. Airbnb is now entering transportation. Both are building toward a single app that handles a traveler's entire journey.
AI in Customer Support Takes Priority
Unlike competitors, Airbnb has avoided AI-powered chatbots designed as primary travel planning interfaces. CEO Brian Chesky said a chatbot interface doesn't suit travel booking. Instead, the company is embedding AI into specific tools across the app.
The most significant application is customer support. Airbnb's AI for Customer Support chatbot now handles 40% of customer queries in the U.S. The company is expanding this globally to support 11 languages.
The updated support system includes interactive cards that let customers update trips or resolve issues without switching screens. Later this year, Airbnb will launch a Text-To-Speech voice-based AI assistant for phone support, though the company has not named its technology partners.
AI Tools for Hosts and Guests
On the host side, AI now auto-fills listing details when hosts enter their address, reducing manual data entry. For guests, the app generates AI summaries of properties in wishlists and creates category tags-location, amenities, family-friendliness-that let users filter reviews by topic.
Airbnb is not launching a formal loyalty program but is offering app credits: up to 15% back on hotel bookings and credits for first car rental bookings. These incentives test whether credit-based rewards drive more app usage.
