Chinese AI Glasses Sales Surge on Government Subsidies and Overseas Demand

Chinese-made AI glasses are experiencing rapid sales growth in Huaqiangbeh, China's major electronics hub in Guangdong Province, driven by a national subsidy program and increasing orders from overseas retailers.

In January, China added AI glasses to its national subsidy program for the first time, offering buyers a 15 percent discount capped at 500 yuan (about $74). The subsidy applies to mainstream models, including Huawei's AI glasses priced at 2,499 yuan, reducing the effective cost to just over 2,100 yuan.

Sales growth has been steep. Huawei's store in Huaqiangbeh reported a 25 percent sales increase from April to May. JD.com, China's largest e-commerce platform, recorded a 200 percent year-over-year jump in transaction volume for mainstream smart AI glasses in May.

The glasses perform basic computing tasks through voice commands. Users can capture photos and videos, record audio, make calls, and access translation features-all from a first-person perspective without pulling out a phone.

Overseas buyers are now a significant source of orders. Merchants in Huaqiangbeh report that international customers often start with small test purchases of one or two units, then place bulk orders of dozens or hundreds after gauging local demand.

"Some overseas customers might initially buy one or two, but after trying them out in the overseas market and receiving a very good response, they immediately place additional orders," said Wang Chengzhu, deputy general manager of Huaqiangbeh electronics market.

The market spans a wide price range. AI glasses in Huaqiangbeh sell for 100 to 5,000 yuan, allowing retailers to target different customer segments and price points.

For sales professionals, this market shift shows how government incentives and first-mover advantage in emerging markets can accelerate product adoption and create distribution opportunities. Understanding these dynamics can inform strategy around AI for Sales and AI for Marketing in regions where new technologies gain traction quickly.
