Currys profits rise 18 percent as artificial intelligence boosts sales

Currys delivered an 18% rise in adjusted pre-tax profit to £191 million for the year ending May 2, powered by a 6% jump in group revenue to £9.25 billion. The electronics retailer credited demand for AI-ready computers and high-profile gaming launches for the gains, even as consumer caution persisted across its markets. Outgoing chief executive Alex Baldock said the performance continues "to strengthen", defying wider concerns about household spending.

Computing drives UK growth while TV sales lag

UK sales rose 3% to £5.4 billion, outpacing a decline in the broader retail sector. Computing stood out as the star performer, boosted by customers upgrading to AI-capable devices and the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2. Every product category grew except consumer electronics, where soft demand for televisions held the number back. The Nordics region also contributed to the revenue expansion, keeping the group on a positive trajectory.

The company added that trading in the two months since year-end has been "very solid". Baldock attributed the momentum to sharper execution, noting that Currys is gaining share in a market where many shoppers remain cautious. The profit figure strips out one-off items, giving a cleaner view of underlying performance.

CEO handoff set for next month

The results come as Baldock prepares to leave after eight years at the helm. He is due to take over as chief executive of Boots in the autumn, and Fredrik Tonnesen, head of the Nordics business, will step into the top role next month. Baldock expressed confidence in the handover, saying the business has an "outstanding leader" in Tonnesen to continue the progress.

Baldock framed the results as evidence of steady improvement: "Currys is trending in the right direction on every dimension that matters. The outside world remains uncertain, and we are not counting on it to do us any favours. Still, there is much more in the tank here."

Why this matters for sales

Currys' results highlight a pattern sales teams can act on: even when consumer confidence is low, products tied to AI and major entertainment releases pull customers into stores and online. The retailer showed that aisles full of AI-powered laptops and a must-have console can override broader economic hesitation. For sales professionals outside electronics, the lesson is that attaching your pitch to technology trends that buyers already want to talk about gives you a concrete opening-regardless of the mood outside.
