Dallas Morning News to host panel on AI skills for job seekers
The Dallas Morning News will host a discussion May 13 on how students and job seekers can use artificial intelligence in their career search while developing skills the technology cannot replace.
The panel runs from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the DEC Network at the Shops at RedBird (3560 W. Camp Wisdom Road, Suite 200). The event is free and open to high school and college students, parents and job seekers.
What's driving the conversation
Since ChatGPT launched in 2022, overall U.S. employment has grown. But employment dropped roughly 1% across the 10% of sectors most exposed to AI, according to a Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas report.
At the same time, AI is raising pay for experienced workers who have skills the technology cannot automate. Universities including the University of North Texas have launched undergraduate and graduate degrees in AI to meet employer demand.
Employers want job seekers to develop skills that resist automation: critical thinking, leadership, persistence and team motivation.
Who's speaking
The panel will be moderated by Wilborn P. Nobles III, a workforce readiness and economic mobility reporter. Speakers include:
- DeVondre Adams, project director for Equus Workforce Solutions, Workforce Solutions Greater Dallas
- Greg Morris, senior vice provost of academic services at Dallas College
- Leslie Collier, Bank of America vice president and program manager for community college partnerships - DFW
- Kamila Vargas-Gonzalez, development and communications coordinator for Bachman Lake Together and a recent entrant into the workforce
- Micaela Herndon, managing director of workforce at Education Is Freedom
The event is powered by the Education Lab and the Future of North Texas, community-funded journalism initiatives from The News.
For job seekers in AI for Hospitality & Events, the panel offers a chance to hear how the technology is reshaping hiring and what employers expect.
