Google Workers Push CEO to Reject Pentagon's Classified AI Deal

Hundreds of Google employees are urging CEO Sundar Pichai to reject the company's ongoing negotiations with the Pentagon to deploy AI systems in classified military work.

In an open letter, workers assigned to AI systems said the technology is not appropriate for classified workloads. They cited concerns that Google's AI could be used for lethal autonomous weapons and mass surveillance if handed over to the Defense Department.

"We feel that our proximity to this technology creates a responsibility to highlight and prevent its most unethical and dangerous uses," the letter read.

Google is in talks with the Pentagon about making its AI available for classified defense applications, according to reporting from The Information. Neither Google nor the Defense Department immediately responded to requests for comment.

What Workers Are Worried About

The employees warned that deploying Google's AI in military settings could result in "inhumane or extremely harmful ways" of using the technology. They framed the decision as a reputational risk to the company.

"Making the wrong call right now would cause irreparable damage to Google's reputation, business and role in the world," the letter added.

Where Other Tech Companies Stand

OpenAI struck a deal with the Pentagon earlier this year that includes restrictions. The agreement prohibits OpenAI's technology from being used for mass domestic surveillance or directing autonomous weapons systems.

Google's potential arrangement with the Defense Department has no such stated limitations, which is central to the workers' objections.

For those working in AI for Government roles, these internal corporate debates signal how tech companies are grappling with military AI deployment. Similar considerations apply across AI for IT & Development teams evaluating where their systems will be used.
