Government Orders Urgent AI Literacy Plan as Agencies Already Adopting the Technology
Technology Minister Dr. Andrew Wheatley has directed the National AI Task Force to deliver policy recommendations to Cabinet on building AI literacy across the public service immediately. The directive signals concern that government agencies are already using AI without adequate safeguards in place.
Wheatley said some ministries, departments and agencies have begun AI adoption ahead of the necessary governance structures, risk management protocols, and accountability measures required for responsible use in the public sector.
The gap between adoption and oversight creates exposure. Agencies may be using AI systems without the policy frameworks or operational guardrails needed to manage the risks.
Wheatley framed the required response as more than a technical training exercise. He called for a government-led initiative to build AI awareness, competence and responsibility across the public service.
The task force has also been directed to consult with the Jamaica Information and Communications Technology Authority to ensure any proposed AI literacy program aligns with the government's broader ICT governance and technology oversight responsibilities.
For government employees, this signals that AI training and policy development are becoming priorities. Those working in policy, operations or technology roles should expect guidance on how their agencies will approach AI use and compliance.
