Long Island University Launches AI² Center for Education and Research

Long Island University announced the AI² Center, a university-wide initiative to integrate artificial intelligence across its academic programs, research, and workforce development. The center brings together more than 150 academic programs, industry partnerships, and new facilities to prepare students for careers in an AI-driven economy.

The university offers bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in artificial intelligence, along with the nation's first Bachelor of Engineering in Digital Engineering. LIU also expanded its AI Competency Distinction-a 9-credit credential available to students across all majors-to equip students with foundational AI skills applicable to healthcare, business, education, communications, and other fields.

New Facilities and Partnerships

LIU is investing in physical infrastructure to support AI education and research. The Post Campus broke ground on a 40,000-square-foot science and innovation building. The Brooklyn Campus opened a 20,000-square-foot 3D design, simulation, and fabrication laboratory.

A strategic partnership with Dassault Systèmes established the 3DEXPERIENCE Education Center of Excellence at LIU. The partnership supports research and experiential learning in precision medicine, healthcare innovation, digital engineering, and AI applications.

Student Support and Mentorship

Students have access to one-on-one mentorship with AI-expert postdoctoral fellows and open studio hours in the simulation and fabrication labs. The center serves as a hub for interdisciplinary collaboration across the university's schools and departments.

Mohammed Cherkaoui, Senior Vice President for Research and Artificial Intelligence, leads the initiative. Cherkaoui is recognized among the top 1% of scientists globally.

Institutional Recognition

LIU ranks in the top 7% of national research universities. The university serves more than 16,000 students across Long Island and Brooklyn campuses and has a network of over 200,000 alumni.

For educators developing AI curriculum or exploring how institutions structure AI programs, LIU's approach offers a model for AI for Education and AI Research integration.
