Meta cuts 8,000 jobs to fund AI expansion
Meta will lay off 10% of its workforce - approximately 8,000 employees - and freeze hiring for 6,000 open positions as part of a strategic shift toward artificial intelligence development. The company said layoff notices will begin May 20, with most terminations completed in a single day through email notifications to personal and work accounts.
The cuts affect a company with roughly 79,000 employees at the start of 2026. Meta plans to deploy internal AI systems to automate work processes, offsetting the reduced headcount.
Severance and benefits for departing employees
Meta's HR director Janelle Gale outlined the compensation package for US-based employees:
- 16 weeks of base pay as severance
- Two additional weeks of pay for each year of employment
- 18 months of health insurance for the employee and family
- Career and immigration support services
The company said it will provide similar packages to international employees, adjusted for local requirements.
AI investment drives restructuring
CEO Mark Zuckerberg has made AI development Meta's primary focus. The company projects record spending in 2024 but needs to offset those costs elsewhere in the budget, according to internal documents obtained by Bloomberg.
Meta previously implemented software to track employee activity, using that data to train AI models. The current restructuring accelerates this shift toward automation and away from traditional headcount-based operations.
Industry pattern
Meta is not alone. Microsoft recently offered voluntary retirement packages to thousands of US employees to reduce operating costs while pursuing AI capabilities.
What this means for HR professionals
The restructuring signals a fundamental change in how large tech companies approach workforce planning. Organizations managing similar transitions should prepare for questions about severance packages, benefits continuation, and career transition support. HR teams will need to understand how AI automation affects their own hiring and employee management functions.
