AI Enables Single Workers to Lead Complex Operations, Perplexity CEO Says
Aravind Srinivas, CEO of Perplexity AI, said artificial intelligence now allows one person to handle work that previously required entire teams. Speaking on the "All-In podcast," Srinivas pointed to advertising campaigns, customer support, and payment processing as examples of tasks a single worker can now manage with AI assistance.
The shift is already visible in hiring data. Challenger, Gray, & Christmas reported that AI was cited as the primary reason for 15,341 announced U.S. job cuts in March 2026.
The HR Challenge: Workforce Displacement and Transition
For HR professionals, the numbers signal a fundamental change in how work gets done. Srinivas suggested that workers facing displacement should consider starting independent ventures using these tools rather than seeking traditional employment.
He framed the transition as an opportunity for greater autonomy. "There is suddenly a new possibility, a new opportunity to go use these tools, learn them and start your own mini business," Srinivas said.
Srinivas also argued that job displacement, while disruptive in the short term, could lead to more satisfying work. "The reality is most people don't enjoy their jobs," he said, suggesting that independent work enabled by AI might address deeper dissatisfaction with traditional employment.
What's Driving the Change
Perplexity has released several updates to increase efficiency for professional users. The company expanded its Computer feature in March and launched Comet for iOS two weeks later, both designed to boost individual productivity.
Marketing and customer engagement teams are already adopting these platforms to maintain output with fewer staff. The trend reflects a corporate priority: maintaining operational performance while reducing headcount.
What HR Leaders Should Consider
This shift requires HR to rethink workforce planning and talent strategy. Organizations will need to decide whether to invest in AI tools that reduce team sizes or maintain larger teams with different skill sets.
For HR professionals managing this transition, resources on AI for Human Resources can help build organizational competency. Those in leadership roles may find the AI Learning Path for CHROs useful for developing workforce strategies in an AI-driven environment.
Srinivas concluded by framing the disruption as inevitable progress. "Even if there is temporary job displacement to deal with, that sort of glorious future is what we should look forward to," he said.
