Qantas CEO frames AI adoption beyond workforce cuts
Qantas chief executive Vanessa Hudson said the airline's AI strategy extends far beyond reducing headcount, arguing the technology's value lies in operational efficiency across multiple business functions.
Speaking at the Macquarie conference in Sydney, Hudson outlined current and potential applications including sales optimization, aircraft maintenance prediction, scheduling efficiency, roster management, and customer disruption handling.
"I don't put limits in terms of the way we're thinking about AI," Hudson said. "I don't think it's the right thing to only think about the value that AI can give is through headcount reduction."
The comments come as Qantas manages scrutiny over workforce changes. The airline cut 400 head office roles recently and faced accusations earlier this year of replacing 30 positions at its Mascot location with AI - a claim the company denied.
Use cases outpace execution capacity
Hudson noted that Qantas has identified more AI applications than it can implement in the near term. "In terms of the amount of use cases we can see for AI, we have more use cases than we can actually execute in the short term," she said.
