SIU Workshop Offers Free Introduction to AI for Educators and Students
Southern Illinois University is hosting a free workshop on May 14 that explores how artificial intelligence is being applied in teaching, learning, research, and problem-solving. The all-day event at the Engineering Alumni Lounge will feature faculty presentations, student demonstrations, and a panel discussion.
Henry Hexmoor, a professor in the School of Computing, said the workshop will examine "the impact of artificial intelligence - beyond the hype." Pre-registration is required.
What to Expect
The morning session runs from 9 a.m. to noon and covers the foundations of generative AI, key concepts, diffusion models, and notable architectures. Speakers include Hexmoor, Holly Lewis (director of the Center for Virtual Expression), Abdur Rahman Bin Shahid (assistant professor of computer science), and Malarvizhi Hirudayaraj from Rochester Institute of Technology.
A one-hour lunch break with light refreshments begins at noon. The afternoon session from 1 to 4 p.m. focuses on frontier models, current challenges, trends, and includes student and administrative demonstrations followed by a panel discussion with a question-and-answer period.
Practical Applications for Educators
For educators, the workshop offers concrete insights into how AI affects classroom teaching and student learning. AI for Teachers Learning Path provides structured training for those seeking deeper expertise after the workshop.
Those interested in the technical foundations can explore Generative AI and LLM Courses to build on concepts covered during the morning session.
