UConn Creates Campus-Wide AI Initiative to Connect Education, Research, and Workforce Programs

The University of Connecticut is launching "AI for ImpaCT," a campus-wide initiative designed to coordinate artificial intelligence work across teaching, research, and workforce development. The Division of Academic Affairs and the Provost's Office are leading the effort.

The initiative consolidates AI projects already underway at the university rather than starting from scratch. It creates a framework for faculty, students, and staff to collaborate more easily and share resources.

Why UConn Is Doing This

Connecticut employers and policymakers face rapid changes in how AI is used across industries and education. UConn, as the state's flagship public research university, positioned itself to help communities understand both the opportunities and challenges AI presents.

Interim Provost Pamir Alpay said the initiative aims to integrate AI thoughtfully into core university functions. "The future of AI will depend not only on technological innovation, but on how we apply it," Alpay said. "Through AI for ImpaCT, we will work to ensure that we integrate AI thoughtfully into our teaching, learning, and research to support academic excellence and promote positive life-long outcomes for our students."

What the Initiative Covers

  • AI for Education - integrating AI into teaching and learning
  • AI Research - supporting innovation across disciplines
  • Workforce development - preparing students for jobs in an AI-driven economy
  • Public engagement - helping employers and policymakers understand AI applications

The university said the initiative will create clearer pathways for learning and research that benefit Connecticut communities beyond campus.
