The UK’s Learning Resource Network has launched the first International GCSE and A Level qualifications in Artificial Intelligence. These courses cover AI concepts, applications, and ethics for students aged 14 to 19 worldwide.

UK Exam Board Launches First International GCSE and A Level in Artificial Intelligence
A UK-based exam board, the Learning Resource Network (LRN), has introduced the world’s first general qualifications in Artificial Intelligence (AI) at International GCSE and A Level. These qualifications target students aged 14 to 19 and are available through approved schools and centres globally.
The courses cover AI concepts, practical applications, and ethical considerations. They hold the same academic weight as traditional subjects like Mathematics and Physics, providing a solid foundation for students interested in AI.
Setting a New Standard in AI Education
Dr Muhammad Zohaib Tariq, Chief Executive of LRN, highlighted the UK’s leadership role in AI education: “By launching the world’s first full school qualification in Artificial Intelligence, we’re setting a global standard and offering students the chance to build strong academic foundations for an AI-powered future.”
Professor Joe Jize Yan from the University of Southampton commented on the course’s balance: “An AI-focused A-level is well-suited, balancing accessibility and relevance by introducing core AI concepts, real-world applications, and ethics without excessive mathematical complexity. It’s ideal for applied AI or interdisciplinary interests, though those aiming for university AI or computer science might need more programming and math experience.”
Addressing Digital Skills Gaps
The launch responds to the growing demand for AI expertise worldwide. UK government and industry reports indicate that the need for skilled AI workers is outpacing supply.
Professor David B. Tann from the University of East London sees this qualification as a practical approach: “Developing International A-level AI is an excellent and innovative way to equip students with future-proof tech skills for the digital age, preparing them for university and enhancing employability. These qualifications could also improve access for underrepresented students.”
Professor Chris Imafidon, Visiting Professor at Yale University, added: “We must equip our students with the tools of tomorrow, today, to thrive in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.”
Global Reach and Adoption
LRN’s AI qualifications are already being adopted by schools across Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. The curriculum aligns with international academic standards, making it suitable for diverse education systems.
Dr Tariq emphasized the significance: “By offering a full qualification, not just a module, the UK is setting a new precedent in school-level AI education.”
