UK Tech Salaries Rise as AI Talent Demand Surges
Salaries for artificial intelligence and data professionals in the UK jumped between 8% and 20% during 2025, according to new research from Xcede's 2026 UK Salary Guide. Senior roles in AI and research science reached up to £181,000 at head-of-level positions.
The growth came despite a cautious hiring environment and predictions of a broader downturn. The technology sector experienced what recruiters describe as a "nuanced picture" - with hiring slowing in some areas while demand for specialist talent accelerated.
Where the Demand Is
Data engineering, analytics engineering, and machine learning engineering roles saw the strongest salary growth. Job postings requiring AI literacy increased by approximately 70% year-on-year.
Cyber security also remained a steady investment area. Salaries for cloud security, identity and access management, and DevSecOps roles stayed strong, reflecting sustained demand for experienced professionals.
Software engineering salary growth was more modest, with most roles rising between 5% and 10%, particularly in Golang, Python, and backend JavaScript.
The Junior Problem
Entry-level hiring has slowed significantly across the sector. Computer science graduate numbers reached record levels while entry-level software engineering positions declined, creating intense competition for junior candidates.
This disconnect between supply and demand at the junior level suggests HR teams will need different strategies for building early-career pipelines.
What Companies Are Looking For
Organisations are prioritising leaner, high-impact teams. They're seeking professionals who combine deep technical expertise with broader strategic and commercial understanding.
Leadership requirements are shifting. Boards increasingly want leaders who combine technical credibility with strong commercial judgment, with data and AI expertise moving from specialist capability to a central part of executive leadership.
