US and China Consider Official AI Discussions at Trump-Xi Summit
Washington and Beijing are weighing whether to launch formal talks on artificial intelligence, with both sides considering putting the topic on the agenda for a summit next week between President Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is leading the American side for the proposed discussions. Beijing has not yet named its counterpart, the Journal reported.
Trump said earlier this week he plans to remind Xi that the United States leads in artificial intelligence as the two countries manage tensions over trade and technology.
Reuters could not immediately verify the report. The summit is scheduled to take place in Beijing.
The potential talks reflect growing government focus on AI governance. Both countries have moved to shape how the technology develops within their borders and globally, with the US implementing executive orders on AI safety and China issuing guidelines for the sector.
Official channels between the two governments on AI remain limited. Any formal discussion framework could establish a foundation for future coordination on issues ranging from AI safety standards to export controls on advanced computing hardware.
