Oman Tests AI-Powered Autonomous Asphalt Paving on Major Road Project

XCMG deployed seven autonomous paving and compaction machines on Oman's Sultan Said bin Taimur Road Dualisation Project in May 2026, marking the first demonstration of AI-enabled asphalt paving in the Sultanate's roads sector. The machines operated in coordinated fleet control across a 12-meter-wide road section under desert conditions, with real-time data monitoring and localized communication networks managing the work.

Oman's Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology and contractor Galfar Engineering & Contracting organized the May 20 demonstration. Government representatives, industry stakeholders, and local media observed the machines perform autonomous paving and compaction operations.

Why Desert Conditions Matter

Road construction in Oman's desert environment demands continuous operation despite high temperatures, wind-blown sand, and rapidly shifting site conditions. These factors stress machine coordination and reliability in ways that standard paving projects do not.

XCMG worked with Galfar for nearly two years before the demonstration. The company conducted site surveys and technical assessments focused on desert operating conditions, communication environments, and local construction standards.

Path to Deployment

Galfar representatives visited XCMG during the company's 2024 International Customer Festival to observe road construction demonstrations. XCMG then adapted its Digital & Intelligent Construction platform for Oman's specific environment and constraints.

The seven machines entered routine operation on the project in April 2026, one month before the public demonstration.

What the Machines Do

The autonomous system coordinates fleet control, manages machine-to-machine communication, and monitors construction data in real time. This allows site managers to track operations and quality metrics from a central location rather than relying on on-site personnel to oversee each machine individually.

The demonstration supports Oman Vision 2040, the country's strategic infrastructure modernization plan aimed at improving connectivity, traffic flow, and road safety.

For professionals in construction and real estate, this deployment illustrates how AI for Real Estate & Construction and AI Agents & Automation translate from controlled environments into active job sites. The Oman project shows both the technical capability and the practical constraints that shape real-world adoption of autonomous equipment in infrastructure work.
