Proxmox AIops MCP server

by AIops-tools

Lets your AI list, start, stop, snapshot, back up, and migrate Proxmox VMs and containers, with every action logged.

This is a helper that connects your AI assistant to Proxmox VE, the software many companies use to run virtual machines and containers on their own servers. Once it is set up, you can ask your AI in plain words to check a VM, start or stop it, take a snapshot, or run a backup, and it will do it for you. It is handy for IT admins and anyone who looks after a small Proxmox setup and wants to save time on routine checks and tasks.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat. It cannot see your servers or touch them. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to another system. This one connects your AI to Proxmox VE, so when you ask about a virtual machine or a backup, the AI can actually look it up or make the change for you.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI something like list my virtual machines or start the one called web-01. The AI passes that request to this helper. The helper talks to your Proxmox server using the credentials you set up, and asks Proxmox to do the work. Proxmox sends back the result, and the helper hands it to your AI, which explains it to you in the chat. Every single call, whether it worked or not, is written to a local log file on your computer so there is a record of what happened.

What you can do with it

  • List your virtual machines and containers with their current state
  • Start, stop, shut down, or reboot a VM or container
  • Take a snapshot before a change and roll back to it if needed
  • Run a backup of a VM and check whether it finished
  • Move a VM to another node in your cluster, or move its disk
  • Check cluster health, storage usage, and which node is under pressure
  • See a plain list of recent actions from the local audit log

Try asking your AI

  • “List all my VMs and tell me which ones are stopped”
  • “Take a snapshot of the VM called db-01 before I patch it”
  • “Which node in my cluster has the highest memory pressure right now”
  • “Start the container called web-01 and tell me when it is up”

What it gives back to you

You get answers in the chat: lists of VMs or containers with their status, short summaries of cluster or storage health, and confirmation when an action like a start or a snapshot has been accepted. Longer jobs like backups or migrations return a task ID, and you can ask your AI to check on it until it finishes. For diagnostics, you get findings with the actual number that triggered them, for example a node at 92 percent memory, plus a suggested next step. Nothing is hidden: every call is also written to a log file on your machine.

Before you start

What you need

  • A Proxmox VE server you can reach, with its address and a node name
  • A Proxmox user or API token for the AI to use, ideally a dedicated account with only the permissions you want it to have
  • Python and the uv tool installed on your computer to install the helper
  • A config file and a small secrets file in your home folder, created by running the setup wizard

Good to know

This tool can start, stop, delete, and restore virtual machines, so a wrong request can take a service offline or overwrite data; give it a Proxmox account with only the permissions you are comfortable with, and use the dry-run option before destructive actions.

Install it with your AI

Add Proxmox AIops MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.

Sign in to get the install prompt

Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check Proxmox AIops MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,609 MCP servers here for you.
