MX Probe is a small helper that checks email addresses for you. You ask your AI about an address, and it comes back with a simple answer: send, hold or kill, plus the reason. It is handy if you do any kind of outreach or mailing and do not want your messages to bounce.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an app or service. This one connects your AI to MX Probe, an email checking service. Once it is connected, your AI can look up whether an email address is real and safe to send to, without you leaving the chat.

What this MCP server does

You give your AI an email address and ask if it is good. The AI passes that address to this helper. The helper then does some quiet checks behind the scenes, like looking up the mail server for that address and asking it if the mailbox exists. It comes back with one of three words: send, hold or kill, plus a short reason so you know why.

What you can do with it

  • Check a single email address and get a send, hold or kill answer
  • See the reason behind the answer, like the mailbox was accepted or refused
  • Run a quick local check with no account needed
  • Run a deeper check that actually talks to the mail server
  • Check a list of addresses before you send a campaign
  • Spot catch-all addresses that accept everything

Try asking your AI

  • “Is hello@example.com safe to send to?”
  • “Check this email address and tell me if I should send or not”
  • “Run a hosted check on sarah@somecompany.com”
  • “Which of these addresses should I hold off on?”

What it gives back to you

You get a short answer in the chat: send, hold or kill, plus a reason in plain words. It also shows a few details like whether the address looks right, which mail server was found, and whether the server accepted it. If something is unclear, it says hold instead of guessing.

Before you start

What you need

  • Node.js 20 or newer if you want to run it yourself
  • A free MX Probe account for the hosted checks (you can sign up through the tool itself)

Good to know

The hosted check uses credits from your account, so keep an eye on your balance if you check a lot of addresses.
