AISIX AI Gateway is a free, open-source program you run on your own computer or server. It sits in front of lots of different AI models and tools, so you have one place to send requests and one place to control who can do what. It is handy for teams that want to use several AI services without juggling a separate account and password for each one.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an outside service. This one is a gateway, which means it stands between your AI and many other AI services and tools, and it decides what is allowed through. When you ask your AI something, it can go through this helper to reach the right model or tool, and the helper keeps track of who asked and what happened.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI a question or give it a task. Your AI sends that request to AISIX, which is running on your own machine or server. AISIX looks at the request, checks that you are allowed to use that model or tool, and then passes it on to the right place, such as OpenAI, Claude, or another connected service. When the answer comes back, AISIX sends it to your AI, and your AI shows it to you. Along the way, AISIX can also block certain content, limit how often you ask, and keep a log of what happened.

What you can do with it

  • Ask one AI model a question and get an answer from it
  • Switch between different AI providers without changing how you ask
  • Use tools from other connected services through the same doorway
  • Set limits on how many requests can be made in a certain time
  • Block or redact sensitive information in requests and answers
  • See a log of what was asked and what came back
  • Connect to other AI agents that talk to each other

Try asking your AI

  • “Ask the gateway to summarize this document using the cheapest available model”
  • “Use the gateway to check if this text contains any personal information before sending it on”
  • “Send this question to Claude and also to GPT-4, then compare the answers”
  • “Show me how many requests I have made today through the gateway”

What it gives back to you

You get back the answer from whichever AI model or tool handled your request, shown right in your chat. If you asked for a comparison, you might see two answers side by side. If something was blocked, you get a short message saying it was stopped. You can also ask for simple numbers, like how many requests were made, and the gateway will report them.

Before you start

What you need

  • A computer or server where you can run a small program
  • Docker installed if you want to use the ready-made container
  • API keys for the AI providers you want to connect (these are like passwords you get from each provider's website)
  • A file called resources.yaml that lists what you want to allow through

Good to know

This gateway can see and change what your AI sends and receives, and it holds your provider keys, so keep the files and the metrics page private.

Install it with your AI

Add AISIX AI Gateway MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.

Sign in to get the install prompt

Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check AISIX AI Gateway MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
