WorkBuddy Board MCP server
by b52tot
Lets your AI run a small desktop task board you can watch, so you see its progress without switching windows.
WorkBuddy Board is a small task board that sits on your desktop, and this MCP server lets your AI write tasks into it. Your AI moves cards between columns like To Do, Doing, Blocked and Done while it works, so you can glance at the corner of your screen and see where it is. It is handy for anyone who lets an AI assistant run long jobs and wants to keep an eye on things without opening a browser.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI one extra skill. This one gives your AI a direct line to the WorkBuddy Board on your computer, so it can create a card, move it along, and report progress. Nothing happens unless your AI asks it to, and you always see the board change in front of you.
What this MCP server does
You tell your AI to do something, and it treats the board as its own notebook. It creates a card for the job, moves it into the Doing column, and updates a progress bar as it goes. If it gets stuck, the card turns yellow and a stall counter appears at the top of the widget. Every change is written into a log, so you can always see who moved what and when.
What you can do with it
- Create a task card with a title, notes, tags and priority
- Move a card between columns like To Do, Doing, Blocked and Done
- Update a progress bar on a card as work moves forward
- See which tasks look stalled because nothing has been reported for a while
- List tasks by column or filter them by tag
- Read the full change log to trace how a task got to where it is
- Archive finished cards out of the main view, or bring them back
Try asking your AI
- “Add a card for building the quarterly report and move it to Doing”
- “Set the progress on the quarterly report card to 40 percent”
- “Show me any tasks that look stalled right now”
- “Move the database cleanup task to Done and archive it”
What it gives back to you
You get short confirmations and lists right in the chat. For example, your AI can show you the current board, the tasks in one column, or the change history of a single card. Progress updates and stall counts also show up live on the desktop widget, so you have both a text answer and a visual one.
Before you start
What you need
- Windows for the ready-made BoardWidget.exe (the source version runs anywhere with Python 3.10 or newer)
- The WorkBuddy client that reads MCP servers, or another MCP-capable app
- You restart your client once after registering the board so it picks up the new connection
Good to know
Your AI can change and delete cards, and one tool clears the entire board, so use board_reset only when you really mean it.
