VS Code Dev Tools MCP server
by biegehydra
Lets your AI look up code details inside VS Code, like where a function is used or defined.

This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to the code editor VS Code. It lets the AI ask VS Code questions about your project, such as where a function is used or what a piece of code means. It is handy if you write code and want your AI to understand your project better.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an app. This one connects your AI to VS Code, so the AI can look things up in your open project when you ask. You install it as a VS Code extension, and it quietly runs in the background.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI something about your code, like where a function is used. The AI sends that question to this helper, which is running inside VS Code. The helper asks VS Code's built-in code tools, which understand your project. VS Code sends back the answer, and the AI explains it to you in the chat. You get code navigation and analysis without leaving your conversation.
Click to zoomWhat you can do with it
- Find every place a function or variable is used in your project
- Jump to where a symbol is defined
- List all symbols in a file so you can see its structure
- Search for a symbol across your whole workspace
- See what a piece of code means with hover information
- Get suggestions for quick fixes and refactors
- Rename a symbol safely across your project
Try asking your AI
- “Where is the function calculateTotal used in this project?”
- “Show me all the symbols in the file I have open.”
- “Find the definition of the User class.”
- “What quick fixes are available for this line of code?”
What it gives back to you
You get answers in the chat, like a list of file names and line numbers where something is used. The AI can also show you an outline of a file or explain what a piece of code does. If you ask for a rename, it can tell you where the changes would happen. Everything comes back as text you can read and act on.
Before you start
What you need

Good to know
It can rename symbols and change your files, so check the changes before you accept them.
