MCP Notify server

by Cactusinhand

Your AI can pop up a desktop notification with a sound when a long task is finally done.

This is a small helper that lets your AI send a desktop notification when it finishes a task. Instead of staring at the screen waiting, you can go make coffee and get pinged when the work is done. It is handy for anyone who runs long AI tasks and keeps checking back.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you inside its window. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI one extra skill or a connection to something outside the chat. This one gives your AI the ability to send notifications to your own computer, with a sound. So when you ask it to notify you at the end, it can actually make your desktop pop up a message.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI to do something, and you add a line like "send me a notification when you are done". The AI finishes the task, then calls this helper. The helper talks to your computer's own notification system and plays a short alert sound. A little popup appears on your screen so you know the task is finished, even if you walked away.

What you can do with it

  • Get a desktop popup when a long AI task finishes
  • Hear a short alert sound so you notice it
  • Use it on Windows, macOS, or Linux
  • Add it once and reuse it for every task
  • Trigger it from Claude Desktop, Cursor, or VSCode Copilot

Try asking your AI

  • “Summarize this document, then send me a notification when you are done.”
  • “Run through all these files and notify me with a sound when the task is finished.”
  • “Analyze this spreadsheet and ping me on my desktop when it is complete.”
  • “Finally, send me a notification when the task finishes.”

What it gives back to you

You get a small popup on your own screen, plus a short alert sound. The chat itself just shows that the notification was sent. There is nothing to read or copy, it is simply a signal that the work is done.

Before you start

What you need

  • Python installed on your computer
  • The uv package manager (a small tool for installing Python programs)
  • On Windows: the pywin32 package (installed with one short command)
  • On macOS: the terminal-notifier tool (installed with one short command)

Good to know

It only sends notifications, it does not read or change your files, so there is nothing risky here.

Install it with your AI

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
