DirForge is a small web app that shows a folder on your computer or server as a browsable website. It also has an MCP server, which means your AI assistant can look inside that same folder for you. It is handy if you keep files on a home server or NAS and want to ask questions about them in plain language.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an app or service. This one connects your AI to DirForge, which is pointed at a folder you chose. Once connected, the AI can look things up in that folder and bring answers back to your chat.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI something about your files. The AI sends that request to the DirForge helper. The helper looks inside the folder you shared with DirForge, which is read-only, so it can look but not change anything. It sends back a list, a file's contents, a search result, or a number like a disk usage total. You see the answer right in your chat.

What you can do with it

  • List what is inside a folder
  • Read the contents of a text file
  • Search for files by name
  • Search inside file contents
  • Check a file's hash (a fingerprint used to verify a file)
  • Find duplicate files
  • Get a disk usage report for a folder

Try asking your AI

  • “What files are in the photos folder?”
  • “Find any file with invoice in the name from last month”
  • “Show me the contents of the readme in the projects folder”
  • “How much space is the backups folder using?”

What it gives back to you

You get answers in the chat: lists of file names, folder contents, matching search results, file text, hash values, or size totals. Everything comes back as normal chat text you can read. Nothing on your disk is changed, because DirForge is read-only.

Before you start

What you need

  • DirForge running somewhere you can reach, like on your own computer or home server
  • A BearerToken set in your DirForge settings (a kind of password for apps)
  • The address of your DirForge MCP endpoint, usually http://localhost:8091/mcp

Good to know

DirForge is read-only, so your AI cannot change or delete files, but it can read anything inside the folder you shared, so point it only at folders you are fine with it seeing.

Install it with your AI

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
