Climatiq MCP server

by jagan-shanmugam

Let your AI work out the carbon emissions of electricity, travel, freight, hotels and spending.

Flow diagram: you ask your AI “How much CO2 does a 300 km train trip cause?”, the Climatiq MCP server connects it to Climatiq, and you get back A clear CO2 number in your chat.

This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to Climatiq, a service that calculates carbon emissions. Once it is set up, you can just ask your AI things like how much CO2 a flight or a month of electricity use produces, and it will do the maths for you. It is handy for anyone who has to report on or think about their company's environmental impact.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you using what it already knows. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to another service. This one connects your AI to Climatiq, a carbon calculation service, so it can look up emission factors and run real calculations when you ask. You do not need to understand how it works inside; you just install it once and then talk to your AI as usual.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI a question in plain words, for example how much carbon a 300 km train trip causes. Your AI passes that to this helper, which talks to the Climatiq service over the internet. Climatiq looks up the right emission factor and works out the number. The helper sends the result back, and your AI explains it to you in the chat, often with the details behind the calculation.

What you can do with it

  • Work out the carbon emissions of electricity use for a given amount and region
  • Estimate emissions from travel by car, plane or train
  • Calculate emissions from freight shipments
  • Estimate emissions from hotel stays
  • Turn spending figures into estimated emissions
  • Search the Climatiq database for the right emission factor
  • Explain in plain words what a calculation means for the climate

Try asking your AI

  • “How much CO2 does 1000 kWh of electricity in the US produce?”
  • “What are the emissions for a 500 km car trip in Germany?”
  • “Estimate the carbon footprint of a two night hotel stay in London.”
  • “Find the emission factor for grid electricity in France.”

What it gives back to you

You get back a clear answer in the chat, usually a number in kilograms of CO2 along with the emission factor that was used. Your AI can also give you a short explanation of what that number means. The details of each calculation are kept so you can refer back to them.

Before you start

What you need

  • A Climatiq account and API key (a kind of password for apps; you get it free by signing up at app.climatiq.io)
  • Python and the uv tool installed on your computer
  • An AI assistant that supports MCP servers, such as the Claude desktop app

Good to know

The calculations are estimates based on Climatiq's emission factors, so treat the numbers as a guide rather than an exact measurement, and keep your API key private.

Install it with your AI

Add Climatiq MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.

Sign in to get the install prompt

Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check Climatiq MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
