Proximo MCP server

by john-broadway

Lets your AI look after your Proxmox servers, with a preview of every change and a record of what it did.

Flow diagram: you ask your AI “Why is container 105 running so slowly?”, on your own computer the Proximo MCP server works with proxmox on your computer, and you get back answers and a plan.

Proximo is a helper that connects your AI assistant to Proxmox, the software many companies use to run their virtual machines and containers. It lets your AI check how your servers are doing, look at logs, and make changes when you ask. It is handy for anyone who looks after Proxmox but does not want to hand an AI the keys with no safety net.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat. It cannot see your servers or touch them. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to another system. Proximo is that helper for Proxmox: once it is connected, your AI can ask Proxmox what is going on and, when you say so, make changes there for you.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI something in plain words, like why a container is running slowly. Your AI uses Proximo to ask your Proxmox server for the facts: status, logs, and a quick health check. If a fix is needed, Proximo shows you a plan first, so you can see what would change before anything happens. Only when you say yes does it make the change, and then it hands you a record of exactly what it did. It starts in read-only mode, so nothing changes until you allow it.

What you can do with it

  • See every virtual machine and container across your cluster in one go
  • Find out why a container is sick by reading its logs and running a health check
  • Check whether your backups are actually fresh, not just marked as done
  • Take a snapshot before touching anything, so you can go back
  • Start, stop, or restart a virtual machine or container after seeing a plan
  • Run a command inside a container when you turn that option on
  • Check that the record of past changes has not been altered

Try asking your AI

  • “Why is container 105 running so slowly?”
  • “Show me every virtual machine on the cluster and how much memory each one is using.”
  • “Are my backups up to date? Check the last few days.”
  • “Restart virtual machine 200, but show me the plan first.”

What it gives back to you

You get answers in the chat: lists of machines, short summaries, log lines, and health notes. When something needs changing, you get a plan that spells out what would happen and how risky it looks. After a change, you get a receipt showing exactly what was done. You can also ask it to check that the record of changes is intact.

Before you start

What you need

  • A Proxmox server you can reach, with its web address
  • A Proxmox API token (a kind of password for apps; you create one in the Proxmox web interface)
  • The token saved in a file on your computer, not typed into the chat
  • The uvx tool installed (a small program runner; the setup guide shows how)

Good to know

It can change, stop, or restart your virtual machines and containers, so start with a read-only token and review every plan before you confirm it.

Install it with your AI

Add Proximo MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.

Sign in to get the install prompt

Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check Proximo MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
