This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to the applications on your Mac. Once it is set up, you can ask your AI to show you what apps you have or to open one for you. It is handy if you use Claude on a Mac and want to skip hunting through folders to find an app.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to something on your computer. This helper connects your AI to the apps installed on your Mac, so it can look them up or open them when you ask. You stay in charge: the AI only does something when you tell it to.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI something like which apps you have, or to open one by name. The AI passes your request to this helper program running on your Mac. The helper looks in your Applications folder or asks macOS to start the app you named. Then it tells the AI what it found or that the app is now open, and the AI tells you back in the chat.

What you can do with it

  • List the applications installed in your Applications folder
  • Launch an app by its name
  • Open a file using a specific application
  • Check whether a particular app is installed before you go looking for it

Try asking your AI

  • “What apps do I have installed on my Mac?”
  • “Open Safari for me”
  • “Launch the Notes app”
  • “Open this PDF with Preview”

What it gives back to you

You get a plain answer in the chat. If you asked for a list, the AI shows you the app names it found. If you asked to open something, it tells you the app was launched. There is nothing to download or read separately; it all shows up as a normal reply.

Before you start
