Let your AI add, update and find your to-dos and projects in the Things app for you.

Flow diagram: you ask your AI “Add a to-do to buy groceries tonight”, on your own computer the Things MCP server works with things app, and you get back A short answer in the chat.

This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to the Things app on your Mac. Once it is set up, you can just tell your AI what you want to add or change, and it does it in Things for you. It is handy if you already use Things to keep track of your tasks and want to skip the tapping and typing.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an app. This one connects your AI to the Things app on your Mac. So when you ask it to add a task or look something up, the AI can actually do it in Things instead of just talking about it.

What this MCP server does

You tell your AI what you want, like adding a to-do or changing a due date. The AI passes that request to this helper program. The helper then talks to the Things app on your Mac using a special link that Things understands. Things carries out the action, and your AI tells you what happened. You can also ask it to search or show a list, and it will open or find the right thing for you.

What you can do with it

  • Add a single to-do or several to-dos at once
  • Create a new project with a list of to-dos inside it
  • Change the title, notes, due date or tags of an existing to-do
  • Mark a to-do or project as completed or canceled
  • Search your Things data for a word or tag
  • Show a built-in list like Today, Inbox or Anytime
  • Add tags, areas and headings to keep things organized

Try asking your AI

  • “Add a to-do to buy groceries tonight”
  • “Create a project called Website Redesign in my Work area with todos: wireframes, copy, review”
  • “Update my Call dentist to-do to be due tomorrow”
  • “Show my Today list”

What it gives back to you

You get a short answer in the chat telling you what was done, like a confirmation that the to-do was added or the project was created. When you search or show a list, it brings back the matching items or opens the right list in Things. For updates, it tells you whether the change went through. It does not show you a big table or file, just the result of your request.

Before you start

What you need
