Qlik Cloud MCP server

by jwaxman19

Lets your AI look through your Qlik Cloud apps, sheets and charts and pull the numbers out for you.

This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to Qlik Cloud. Once it is set up, you can ask your AI things like which apps you have, what sheets are inside one, and what data sits behind a chart. It is handy if you work with Qlik dashboards and want answers without clicking around every screen.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to another service. This one connects your AI to Qlik Cloud, so it can look things up there and bring the results back into your conversation. You ask in normal words, and the helper does the talking to Qlik behind the scenes.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI a question about your Qlik Cloud workspace. The AI passes that request to this helper program. The helper signs in to Qlik Cloud with your API key and asks Qlik for the list of apps, or the sheets in an app, or the charts on a sheet, or the actual rows of data behind a chart. Qlik sends the answer back, and the helper hands it to your AI, which shows it to you in the chat.

What you can do with it

  • List the Qlik apps you have access to
  • Show the sheets inside a Qlik app
  • List the charts on a sheet
  • Pull the data rows behind a chart
  • Fetch up to a set number of rows per request
  • Include chart details like titles and types along with the data

Try asking your AI

  • “Which Qlik apps do I have in my workspace?”
  • “List the sheets in my sales app”
  • “What charts are on the Overview sheet?”
  • “Get me the data from the Revenue by Region chart, up to 500 rows”

What it gives back to you

You get answers in the chat as lists or tables. For apps and sheets you see names, IDs and basic details. For chart data you get the column headers and the rows, and if you leave metadata on, a bit of extra info about the chart. Nothing is changed in Qlik, it only reads.

Before you start

What you need

  • A Qlik Cloud account with access to the apps you want to read
  • A Qlik Cloud API key (you create it in Settings, under API keys, and it acts like a password for apps)
  • Your Qlik tenant URL (the web address you use to log in to Qlik Cloud)
  • Deno installed, or Node.js if you prefer the Node route

Good to know

It only reads from Qlik, but the data it pulls can be sensitive, so keep your API key private and give it only the access it needs.
