Dash MCP server
by Kapeli
Lets your AI search the documentation sets you already have in Dash on your Mac.

This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to Dash, the documentation browser for macOS. Once it is set up, you can ask your AI to look things up in the docs you have installed, instead of copying and pasting pages yourself. It is handy if you keep Dash open all day and want your AI to read the same reference material you do.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat with you using what it already learned. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI one new skill or one new connection. This helper connects your AI to Dash on your Mac, so it can look inside your installed documentation sets when you ask. You stay in the chat; the helper does the looking up.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI something like which docsets you have installed, or to search for a function name. The AI passes that request to this helper, which talks to the Dash app on your Mac. Dash searches across your documentation sets and code snippets and hands back the matches. The AI then shows you the results in the chat, and if you want, it can open one of those pages and read it for you.
Click to zoomWhat you can do with it
- List the documentation sets you have installed in Dash
- Search across your docsets and your saved code snippets
- Open a documentation page from a search result and read it
- Turn on full-text search for a specific docset so searches go deeper
- Ask follow-up questions about a page your AI just loaded
Try asking your AI
- “Which documentation sets do I have installed in Dash?”
- “Search my Dash docs for how to make an HTTP request in Python”
- “Find anything in my snippets about date formatting”
- “Open the page you just found and summarize it for me”
What it gives back to you
You get back lists of docsets, search results with titles and short snippets, and the text of a documentation page when your AI loads one. It all shows up as normal chat text, so you can read it, ask follow-up questions, or have your AI explain it. Nothing is changed in Dash itself except when you ask it to turn on full-text search for a docset.
Before you start
What you need
- A Mac, since Dash only runs on macOS
- The Dash app installed (Dash 8 is required)
- Python 3.12 or newer
- uv, a small tool you install with Homebrew
Good to know
It only reads from Dash, but turning on full-text search for a docset can take a while and use some disk space on your Mac.
Install it with your AI
Add Dash MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed
You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
Sign in to get the install prompt
Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check Dash MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
Who it's for
Developers and anyone who keeps Dash open on a Mac and wants their AI to read the same documentation they do.
