MongoDB MCP server
by kiliczsh
Lets your AI look at your MongoDB collections, understand their shape, and run queries for you.

This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to a MongoDB database. MongoDB is a place where apps store data in collections, a bit like folders full of records. If you work with data stored in MongoDB and want to ask questions about it in plain language, this is for you.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an app or service. This one connects your AI to MongoDB, so the AI can look at your collections and run queries for you when you ask. You set it up once, and then you just talk to your AI like normal.
What this MCP server does
You tell your AI what you want to know or change in your MongoDB database. The AI uses this helper to talk to MongoDB on your behalf. The helper looks at your collections, figures out what fields the documents have, and runs the query or change you asked for. Then it sends the result back to your AI, which explains it to you in the chat. You can also turn on a read-only mode so nothing can be changed by accident.
Click to zoomWhat you can do with it
- List the collections in your database
- Show what fields and types your documents have
- Run queries to find specific records
- Run aggregation pipelines to group and summarize data
- Insert new documents when write mode is on
- Update existing documents when write mode is on
- Create indexes to speed up lookups
- Convert timestamps into readable dates
Try asking your AI
- “What collections do I have in this database?”
- “Show me the shape of the orders collection, what fields does it have?”
- “Find the 10 most recent users who signed up this month.”
- “Group my sales by country and show the total for each.”
What it gives back to you
You get answers in the chat: lists of collections, summaries of what fields exist, and the actual records or numbers your query found. If you asked for a change, it tells you what it did. Long queries can show progress and can be stopped if you change your mind.
Before you start
What you need
- A MongoDB database and its connection address (a string that starts with mongodb://)
- Node.js 20 or newer on your computer
- A MongoDB user that has access to the database you want to use
Good to know
If you leave read-only mode off, the AI can add, change, or delete data in your database, so use a read-only MongoDB user when you only need to explore.
Install it with your AI
Add MongoDB MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed
You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
Sign in to get the install prompt
Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check MongoDB MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
Who it's for
Anyone who keeps data in MongoDB and wants to explore or update it by asking their AI in plain language, without writing queries by hand.
