Crypto Sentiment MCP server

by kukapay

Lets your AI check how people are talking about a cryptocurrency on social media and in the news.

Flow diagram: you ask your AI “How do people feel about Ethereum lately?”, the Crypto Sentiment MCP server connects it to Santiment, and you get back plain answer in chat.

This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to Santiment, a service that tracks what people say about cryptocurrencies online. Once it is set up, you can just ask your AI things like how Bitcoin is being talked about this week, and it will look it up for you. It is handy for anyone who follows crypto prices and wants a quick read on the mood around a coin.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you using what it already learned. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an outside service. This one connects your AI to Santiment, which collects social media posts and news about cryptocurrencies. So when you ask about Bitcoin's mood, your AI passes the question to this helper, and the helper fetches the answer from Santiment.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI a question in plain words, like how people feel about Ethereum lately. Your AI sends that request to this helper program running on your computer. The helper then talks to Santiment, which gathers posts and articles from across the internet. Santiment sends back numbers about mood, mentions, or trending words, and the helper hands them to your AI. Your AI then explains the result to you in a normal sentence in the chat.

What you can do with it

  • Check whether the mood around a coin is mostly positive or negative
  • Count how many times a coin was mentioned on social media
  • Spot sudden spikes or drops in chatter about a coin
  • See which words are trending in crypto discussions right now
  • Find out how much of the crypto conversation a coin takes up

Try asking your AI

  • “What's the sentiment balance for Bitcoin over the last week?”
  • “How many times has Ethereum been mentioned on social media in the past 5 days?”
  • “Tell me if there's been a big change in Bitcoin's social volume recently, with a 30% threshold.”
  • “What are the top 3 trending words in crypto over the past 3 days?”

What it gives back to you

You get back short, plain answers in the chat, like a number for sentiment balance or a count of mentions. For example, it might say Bitcoin's sentiment balance over the past 7 days is 12.5, or that Ethereum was mentioned 8,432 times. It can also list trending words or tell you the percentage of conversation a coin dominates. Nothing is saved to a file; it all shows up as text in your chat.

Before you start

What you need

  • Python 3.10 or newer installed on your computer
  • A Santiment API key (a kind of password for apps; you can get a free one from app.santiment.net)
  • The uv tool installed, which is used to run the server

Good to know

The numbers come from social media and news, which can be noisy and are not financial advice, so treat them as one signal among many.
