MigrationPilot MCP server
by mickelsamuel
Lets your AI check PostgreSQL migrations for dangerous locks before it runs them, without a database.

MigrationPilot is a safety checker for PostgreSQL migrations. It looks at the SQL your AI wrote and tells you if it could lock a table, block your app, or cause an outage. It is handy for anyone who lets an AI assistant write database changes.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to another tool. This one connects your AI to MigrationPilot, a local checker for PostgreSQL migrations. So when you ask your AI to change a table, it can first ask MigrationPilot whether that change is safe.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI to write or run a database migration. Before doing anything, the AI calls this helper with the SQL. The helper parses the SQL with PostgreSQL's own parser, checks it against 112 lock-safety rules, and returns a pass or fail verdict with a list of problems. Your AI then shows you the verdict, or refuses to apply the migration if it failed.
Click to zoomWhat you can do with it
- Check a migration for unsafe locks before it runs
- Get a pass or fail verdict with a risk score
- See which rule was broken and why it matters
- Get a suggested safe rewrite of the SQL
- Explain what lock a single SQL statement takes
- Analyze a whole folder of migration files at once
- Look up what any of the 112 rules means
Try asking your AI
- “Check this migration before you run it: ALTER TABLE users ADD CONSTRAINT users_email_unique UNIQUE (email);”
- “Is it safe to add a NOT NULL column to the orders table?”
- “What lock does CREATE INDEX take on a big table?”
- “Analyze all the SQL files in my migrations folder and tell me which ones are risky”
What it gives back to you
You get a short verdict in the chat: pass or fail, a risk score out of 100, and a list of violations. Each violation names the rule, explains why it is dangerous, and often shows a safer version of the SQL. For a folder, you get a per-file summary plus an overall picture.
Before you start
What you need
- Node.js 22 or newer on your computer
- An AI assistant that supports MCP servers, like Claude Desktop or Claude Code
Good to know
It only checks the SQL text, so it cannot know your real table sizes or traffic, and it never connects to your database unless you give it a connection.
Install it with your AI
Add MigrationPilot MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed
You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
Sign in to get the install prompt
Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check MigrationPilot MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
Who it's for
Developers and database-minded teammates who let an AI assistant write PostgreSQL migrations and want a safety net before those changes hit production.
