DevPlan MCP server

by mmorris35

Turns your project idea into a step-by-step development plan your AI can follow.

Flow diagram: you ask your AI “Help me plan a tool to manage my dotfiles”, the DevPlan MCP server works in steps: asks about your project, then writes a plan, then creates helper files, and you get back A step-by-step plan.

DevPlan is a helper that turns a rough idea, like "a tool for managing dotfiles", into a clear, step-by-step development plan. It asks you questions, writes a project brief, and builds a plan detailed enough that an AI coding assistant can work through it without losing track. It is handy if you use Claude Code or another AI coding tool and want it to stay organized across sessions.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to a service. This one connects your AI to DevPlan, a planning method that lives online. Once it is connected, you can ask your AI to plan a project and it will use DevPlan behind the scenes to do the work.

What this MCP server does

You tell your AI what you want to build. The AI calls DevPlan, which asks you a set of questions to understand your project. DevPlan then writes a project brief and a detailed development plan with phases, subtasks, and complete code blocks. It can also create a CLAUDE.md file and two helper agents, one to build the work and one to check it. When something goes wrong during building, DevPlan can save that as a lesson so future plans avoid the same mistake.

What you can do with it

  • Turn a rough project idea into a written development plan
  • Create a PROJECT_BRIEF.md that captures your requirements
  • Generate a CLAUDE.md file so your AI knows the project rules
  • Build an executor agent that works through the plan step by step
  • Build a verifier agent that tries to break the finished code
  • Convert a GitHub issue into a fix-it task with subtasks
  • Check whether a plan is complete enough for an AI to follow
  • Show progress and what to do next

Try asking your AI

  • “Use devplan_start to help me build a CLI tool for managing dotfiles”
  • “Create a development plan for this project”
  • “Validate my development plan”
  • “Use devplan_progress_summary to show me where we are”

What it gives back to you

You get back written files and answers in the chat. That includes a project brief, a development plan with phases and code blocks, agent files, and validation results that tell you if anything is missing. Progress summaries show which subtasks are done and what comes next.

Before you start

What you need

  • The Claude desktop app or Claude Code
  • A GitHub account if you want to turn issues into tasks

Good to know

The planning and agent files it creates can guide your AI to write and change code in your project, so review the plan before you let it run.

Install it with your AI

Add DevPlan MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.

Sign in to get the install prompt

Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check DevPlan MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
