Hetzner DNS MCP server

by ni-c

Let your AI look up and change your Hetzner DNS zones and records for you.

Flow diagram: you ask your AI “Add an A record for www pointing to 198.51.100.1”, the Hetzner DNS MCP server connects it to Hetzner DNS, and you get back lists, details and confirmations.

This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to your Hetzner DNS setup. Once it is connected, you can ask your AI in plain words to look up a zone, add a record, or change a TTL, and it will do it through the Hetzner Cloud API. It is handy if you manage domains at Hetzner and would rather not click through the console for every small change.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an app or service. This one connects your AI to Hetzner DNS, so it can look things up and make changes there when you ask. You install it once, add your Hetzner token, and from then on your AI can talk to Hetzner on your behalf.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI something like "what zones do I have on Hetzner?" or "add an A record for www". The AI uses this helper, and the helper talks to the Hetzner Cloud API using your token. Hetzner sends back the answer or makes the change, and the helper passes it to your AI. Your AI then shows you a list, a summary, or confirms what it changed. For slow operations like zone file imports, it can also check the status of the job.

What you can do with it

  • List your DNS zones with their status, nameservers and record counts
  • Look up a single zone or a specific record set by name and type
  • Create, update or delete record sets and individual records
  • Import a BIND zone file or export a zone as a zone file
  • Change the default TTL of a zone or the TTL of a record set
  • Turn delete or change protection on and off for zones and records
  • Check the status of background zone actions like imports

Try asking your AI

  • “List all my Hetzner DNS zones and their nameservers”
  • “Show me the A records for www.example.com”
  • “Add an A record for www pointing to 198.51.100.1 with a TTL of 300”
  • “Export the zone file for example.com so I can look at it”

What it gives back to you

You get back lists, details and confirmations in the chat. For example, a list of zones with their status and record counts, or the records inside a record set. When you make a change, the AI tells you what it did. Zone file exports come back as text you can read or save.

Before you start

What you need

  • A Hetzner Cloud account with DNS zones in a project
  • A Hetzner Cloud API token (a kind of password for apps; you create one in the Hetzner Cloud Console under your project, Security, API tokens)
  • Node.js 22 or newer if you install it with npx
  • An MCP client like Claude Desktop, Claude Code or Codex

Good to know

This server can create, change and permanently delete DNS zones and records, so a wrong instruction can take a site offline; it also asks for your Hetzner API token, which gives access to your DNS project.

Install it with your AI
