trace-mcp code intelligence server

by nikolai-vysotskyi

Lets your AI understand your codebase structure and answer questions about how files and features connect.

trace-mcp is a helper that builds a map of your code project, showing how all the files, functions, and pieces relate to each other. Once connected, your AI assistant can use that map to answer questions like what breaks if you change something, or how a request flows through your app. It is made for developers and anyone who works with code and wants their AI to be smarter about it.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat about what you paste in. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to something, here to your code project. This helper reads your code and builds a map of how everything connects, so when you ask your AI a question about your code, it can look at the map instead of guessing. You do not need to understand the technical details; you just install it and your AI gets this new ability.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI a question about your code, like what happens if you change a particular file. Your AI uses this helper to look at the map it built of your project. The helper finds all the places that depend on that file and reports back. Your AI then tells you what might break or what needs updating. It can also answer questions about how different parts of your code connect, like which page a certain button leads to.

What you can do with it

  • Find out what parts of your code will break if you change a specific file or function
  • See how a web request flows from the URL all the way to the page that gets shown
  • Discover which pieces of code are not covered by tests
  • Trace how different services in your project talk to each other
  • Search through past conversations and decisions about your code
  • Get a summary of the most important files and symbols in your project
  • Rename a function or file and see everywhere it is used

Try asking your AI

  • “What breaks if I change the User model?”
  • “Show me the request flow for the login page”
  • “Which parts of this module are not tested?”
  • “Why was the authentication system built this way?”

What it gives back to you

You get clear answers in your chat, like a list of affected files, a step-by-step flow of how a request moves through your app, or a summary of untested code. It might also show you a risk score or point out decisions that were made earlier about that part of the code. The information comes back as text you can read and act on, not as raw data you have to parse.

Before you start

What you need

  • Node.js 18 or newer installed on your computer
  • A code project on your machine that you want to analyze
  • An AI assistant that supports MCP, like Claude Code or Cursor

Good to know

This tool reads your code and builds a map, so make sure you are comfortable with it accessing your project files. It can also make changes like renaming, so double-check before applying.

Install it with your AI

Add trace-mcp code intelligence server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.

Sign in to get the install prompt

Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check trace-mcp code intelligence server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
