NLQueries MCP server
by nlqueries
Ask your database questions in plain English and get back validated SQL answers.

NLQueries is a helper that turns plain English questions into real database queries. You type something like "how many orders shipped last month?" and it writes the SQL, checks it, and runs it for you. It is handy if you work with data but do not write SQL yourself, or if you just want to save time.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an app or service. This one connects your AI to NLQueries, which in turn connects to your database. So when you ask a question, your AI can look things up in your data and bring the answer back to you.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI a question in everyday words. The AI passes it to NLQueries. NLQueries looks at your database structure and your past queries, writes SQL, checks that the SQL is valid, and runs it against your database. Then it sends the result back to your AI, which explains it to you in the chat.
Click to zoomWhat you can do with it
- Ask questions about your data in plain English
- Get back the SQL that was used, so you can check it
- Look up what tables and columns exist in your database
- Ask follow-up questions that keep the earlier context
- Ask questions about documents like PDFs or Word files
- Get a mix of database and document answers in one reply
- Rate answers so the tool learns what good looks like
Try asking your AI
- “How many orders shipped last month?”
- “And how many of those were returned?”
- “What tables do we have about customers?”
- “What does our refund policy document say about late returns?”
What it gives back to you
You get a written answer in the chat, usually with the number or list you asked for. You also get the SQL that was used, so you can see how the answer was worked out. If the answer came from a document, you get the source it came from. Sometimes it shows a cached answer if you asked something very similar before.
Before you start
What you need
- Python 3.11 or newer (or Docker, if you prefer)
- An LLM key from Anthropic or OpenAI (a kind of password for the AI service)
- A Qdrant key, which is any random secret you make up yourself
- Access details for your database, like host, name, user, and password
Good to know
It reads your database, so make sure the account it uses only has read access, and be careful about asking questions that might reveal private data.
Install it with your AI
Add NLQueries MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed
You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
