the13f MCP server

by pickelfintech

Lets your AI look up what big institutional investors held, quarter by quarter, from public SEC filings.

Flow diagram: you ask your AI “Show me Berkshire's top 20 positions last quarter”, the the13f MCP server connects it to SEC 13F filings, and you get back A readable holdings summary.

This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to the13f, a service built on public SEC filings that show what large investment managers own. It is handy if you follow big funds, write research notes, or just want to ask questions like "what did Berkshire hold last quarter?" without digging through filings yourself. You need a free API key and a chat app that supports MCP servers, like Claude Desktop or Cursor.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program you add to your AI app that gives it a new skill or a connection to an outside service. This one connects your AI to the13f, so when you ask about a fund's holdings, your AI can actually go look it up instead of guessing. You install it once, add your key, and then just ask questions in plain English.

What this MCP server does

You type a question in your chat app, like "show me Berkshire's top 20 positions last quarter." Your AI reads the question, picks the right tool from this server, and sends the request to the13f. The13f looks up the data from public SEC 13F filings and sends it back. Your AI then turns that into a readable answer in the chat, with a short disclaimer attached.

What you can do with it

  • Look up a fund's full holdings for a given quarter
  • Search for a manager by name and find their filings
  • Compare your own portfolio to what big institutions hold
  • See which stocks the most managers held in a quarter
  • Check the overall institutional mood and sector flows
  • Pull holdings for up to 25 manager-and-quarter pairs in one go
  • Browse the full list of over 8,600 filers with quick stats

Try asking your AI

  • “Pull Berkshire Hathaway's top 20 positions as of Q4 2025 and summarize what grew the most quarter over quarter.”
  • “I own AAPL, MSFT, and NVDA equal-weight. Find the 5 institutional managers whose portfolios most closely resemble mine.”
  • “What sector did 13F filers most aggressively reduce last quarter? Show me the top three managers leading the reduction.”
  • “List all quarters that have holdings data and tell me which one is the latest.”

What it gives back to you

You get back structured data your AI turns into a readable answer: lists of positions with share counts and values, manager names and identifiers, sector flow numbers, or a short summary of the institutional regime. It shows up right in your chat, usually as a table or a bulleted summary. Every response also includes a short disclaimer that your AI is asked to show you. Nothing is changed on your side; it is read-only.

Before you start

What you need

  • A free API key from the13f.com/developers (sign up with your email; the key is shown once, so copy it right away)
  • An MCP-compatible chat app, like Claude Desktop, Cursor, or VS Code with Continue
  • Python 3.11 or newer, and the uvx tool (or pip if you prefer)

Good to know

The data comes from public SEC filings that can be up to 45 days old, it is research only, and it is not investment advice, so do not treat it as a signal to buy or sell anything.

Install it with your AI

Add the13f MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.

Sign in to get the install prompt

Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check the13f MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
