Nutrient Document Engine MCP server
by PSPDFKit
Lets your AI read, edit, redact and split documents that run on your own computer or company server.

This is a helper that connects your AI assistant to a document processing engine you run yourself, not in someone else's cloud. You upload PDFs to a small dashboard on your own machine, then ask your AI to read them, pull out text, hide private details, or split them up. It is handy for people who handle sensitive paperwork and are not allowed to send it to outside services.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an app or service. This one connects your AI to Nutrient Document Engine, a document tool that runs on your own computer or company server. Once it is connected, the AI can look things up and do things with your documents when you ask.
What this MCP server does
You upload your PDFs to a small web page that runs on your own machine. Then you ask your AI something in plain words, like which documents are there or what a contract says. The AI passes your request to this helper, and the helper talks to the Document Engine running on your computer. The engine reads or changes the file, and the answer comes back into your chat. You never have to touch a command line after the first setup.
Click to zoomWhat you can do with it
- List the documents you have uploaded
- Extract text from a PDF and show it in the chat
- Search inside documents for a word or phrase
- Hide social security numbers or credit card numbers with redactions
- Split a long contract into separate sections
- Add a watermark to a document
- Fill in a PDF form with the details you give
Try asking your AI
- “What documents do I have available?”
- “Extract all the names and phone numbers from these invoices”
- “Redact all social security numbers from these tax forms”
- “Split this 50-page contract into separate sections”
What it gives back to you
You get answers in plain text in your chat: a list of your documents, the text pulled from a page, the names and numbers it found, or a short note saying what it changed. When it edits a file, like adding a redaction or a watermark, it tells you which documents were updated and how many changes it made. The changed files stay in your own Document Engine, ready to open from the dashboard.
Before you start
What you need
- The Claude desktop app (or another AI tool that supports MCP)
- Docker Compose, to run the Document Engine on your own machine
- Node.js 18 or newer, because the helper runs through npx
- A license key from Nutrient if you want to remove the evaluation watermarks
Good to know
It can change your documents, so redactions, watermarks and form fills are real edits, and the Document Engine runs in evaluation mode with watermarks until you add a paid license key.
