Diagrams.so MCP server

by RedHold · official

Ask your AI to draw cloud architecture diagrams and it makes real draw.io files you can edit.

Flow diagram: you ask your AI “Draw an AWS web app with a load balancer”, the Diagrams.so MCP server connects it to Diagrams.so, and you get back an editable diagram file.

This is a helper made by Diagrams.so that lets your AI assistant draw cloud architecture diagrams for you. You describe what you want in plain English, and it builds the diagram, checks it for common design problems, and hands you a file. It is handy for anyone who has to sketch how servers, databases, and networks fit together but does not want to drag boxes around by hand.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to another service. This one connects your AI to Diagrams.so, a website that draws cloud architecture diagrams. Once it is set up, you can just ask for a diagram in your normal chat box and the AI will go make it for you.

What this MCP server does

You type a request in your AI chat, like asking for an AWS web app diagram. The AI passes that request to this helper, which sends it to the Diagrams.so service. Diagrams.so builds the diagram and sends back the drawing plus a list of design warnings. The AI shows you the result in the chat, and you can ask it to change things, fix a warning, or save the file.

What you can do with it

  • Generate a cloud architecture diagram from a plain English description
  • Edit a diagram with a follow-up request, like adding a load balancer
  • Check a diagram for Well-Architected design warnings and fix them one by one
  • Import an existing draw.io file so you can work on it through chat
  • Export the diagram as a draw.io file or an SVG image
  • Search a public gallery of diagrams for inspiration or a starting point
  • See your version history and go back to an earlier version

Try asking your AI

  • “Generate an AWS three-tier web app with an ALB, EC2 Auto Scaling and RDS Multi-AZ, then show me the warnings”
  • “Add a CloudFront distribution in front of the ALB”
  • “Fix the warning about no encryption in transit and show me the new score”
  • “Export that diagram as SVG so I can drop it in the README”

What it gives back to you

You get back a diagram, shown as a draw.io file you can open and edit, plus a list of design warnings and a score. You also see how many credits the action cost and how many you have left. If you ask for an export, you get the file itself, either as draw.io XML or as an SVG image.

Before you start

What you need

  • Node.js version 18 or newer on your computer
  • A Diagrams.so account (you connect by approving in your browser, no key to copy)
  • An MCP client like Claude Desktop, Claude Code, or Cursor

Good to know

Generating, editing, fixing, and rearranging diagrams spend credits from your Diagrams.so account, and deleting a diagram removes it, so check before you confirm.

Install it with your AI

Add Diagrams.so MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.

Sign in to get the install prompt

Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check Diagrams.so MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
