ISO 20022 pacs.008 MCP server

by sebastienrousseau

Let your AI create, check and read ISO 20022 payment messages like pacs.008, and turn old SWIFT MT103 files into the new format.

This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to a tool for ISO 20022 payment messages, the standard banks use for cross-border credit transfers. It is handy if you work in payments, operations or compliance and you deal with pacs.008, pacs.002 or pacs.004 files. Instead of hand-editing XML, you describe the payment in plain words and let the AI do the fiddly parts.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat. It cannot open a payment file, check it against bank rules, or produce a valid XML message. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI one new skill. This one gives it a connection to the pacs008 library, so your AI can build, check and read ISO 20022 payment messages for you when you ask.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI something like "make a pacs.008 for this payment" or "check this XML file". The AI passes your request to this helper. The helper talks to the pacs008 library, which knows the message formats and the bank rulebooks. It builds or checks the message and sends the result back. You see the answer, the generated XML, or a clear list of problems, right in the chat.

What you can do with it

  • Generate a ready-to-send pacs.008 XML message from a list of payment details
  • Validate an existing XML message against the official schema
  • Check payment records against a specific bank or scheme rulebook
  • Parse an incoming ISO 20022 message and tell you what type it is
  • Convert an old SWIFT MT103 message into pacs.008 records
  • Check whether a postal address is structured enough for the 2026 rules
  • Repair old unstructured addresses so they pass the new rules

What it gives back to you

You get back plain answers in the chat. That can be a list of supported message types, a set of required fields, a full XML message you can copy, or a list of validation errors with the field names. When it parses a message, it tells you the type and the key details inside it.

Before you start

What you need

  • Python 3.10 or newer and pip
  • The pacs008 library installed first from its source page
  • An MCP client such as the Claude desktop app

Good to know

The address repair tool is experimental, so always check its output before sending it to a bank, and remember that generated messages can carry real payment instructions.
